OUR NON-DISCRIMINATION
CHRISTIAN EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES POLICY
Euroresource International Ltd. was
a company long in creation with its' first website
appearing in 2004 in four language versions: English,
Polish, Russian and Ukrainian, in order to help people
from those countries that had newly acceded and become
part of the European Union learn about job opportunities
and life in the UK in a language that was familiar
to them.
Our International
Recruitment Website (for jobseekers) and its' companion site My-Resource (for employers) has gradually become increasingly
more popular, a fact which is borne out by their unique
visitor* statistics:
Unique Visitors 2004 ------> 2,564
(August 2004 - end 2004)
Unique Visitors 2005 ------> 28,956
Unique Visitors 2006 ------> 166,059
Unique Visitors 2007 ------> 299,893
Unique Visitors 2008 ------> 500,000?
* A UNIQUE VISITOR IS A VISITOR WHO
HAS VIEWED AT LEAST 2 PAGES OR MORE OF THE WEBSITE
DURING THEIR VISIT.
Our reason for also publishing the
website in English was in order to give as many people
as possible the opportunity of finding work and registering
their details with us, including people born in the
UK.
We have plans to publish the website
in Romanian, Czech and Hungarian in the future so
as to include the native languages of those Eastern
Europeans who find difficulty with the existing language
versions.
MINORITY REPRESENTATION
We believe that ALL people
are equal and are acutely aware that minorities can
suffer in a foreign country if they are not well represented
because of their lack of language and/or negotiation
skills. To address this problem, we have created two companies
who employ people from minority ethnic groups where
their lack of English is respected rather than discriminated
against, namely: Polish
Subcontractors and Polish
Plumbers. We have put managers in place as well as administrative staff who speak
all if not some of the following languages: English, Russian, Polish and Ukrainian so that poor levels of English in
workers is not a barrier preventing them from working
in the UK.
IMPORTANT NOTE: These companies also employ British workers and any job advertised is open to anyone who has the necessary skills. Our multi-lingual managers are all British citizens, although this is more by co-incidence than by design.
NOT JUST A POLISH
COMPANY
From all the people who have come
to the UK since the accession in 2004, Polish workers
(a country whose population equals the sum of the populations
of all the other countries that acceded in 2004 added
together - before the latest accession of Romania and Bulgaria) are by far the the largest ethnic group which have migrated to the UK.
It is therefore natural that more
Polish people are attracted to our company than people
from any other accession country.
All our companies employ English
workers as part of our equal opportunities policy.
We recruit who we feel will best fit the role, rather
than prefer foreign workers, a fact which is demonstrated
by the numbers of temporary English workers we employ.
OUR POLICY ON NON
EXPLOITATION
We believe that ALL
people are equal and are entitled to an equal opportunity
to earn a wage which not only takes care of their
day to day needs but also leaves them with a reasonable
amount of disposable income and we are therefore strongly against the exploitation of any minority
group because they come from a country where wages
are lower or where there is high unemployment, or
they lack language skills, or for any other reason
of whatever nature.
We fully recognise the predatory
and exploitative nature that abounds in this world
amongst the majority of peoples, organisations and
even governments and our stance on this as a Christian
owned company trying its best to practice Christ's
teaching is that we simply turn down
offers of jobs or work made by employers or individuals
who approach us and do not wish to offer a competitive
salary or hourly rate.
In setting salary
levels and hourly rates for people who work for us
either directly, as subcontractors or are placed by us with employers,
we rely upon the findings of unbiased research we carry
out periodically. We also publish the results of some
of our research (since wages vary little within a
12 month period, this data is updated annually). For
an example of current research click here.
We have for several
months (at the time of writing) placed the link to
our construction wages survey in a highly prominent
place on the homepage
of our main website, although it has been on our homepage
for nearly a year. We did this because we felt it
was of high importance for job seekers to learn
what they can expect to be paid for the work they
do, and so that employers visiting our website could
see that competitive salaries is one of our major
concerns.
OUR POLICY ON SETTING
HOURLY RATES TO OUR CUSTOMERS TAKES NON-EXPLOITATIVE POLICY INTO ACCOUNT
We believe that prices for services
should be competitive and that consumers should not
pander to the GREED of certain tradesmen out there
by paying over the odds for services that they can
obtain at more competitive rates. In order to be competitive, we carry out research annually
by polling a large number of competitors to determine
what a competitive rate would be to charge our clients
on an hourly basis. For example, when we created Polish
Plumbers, which provides much needed plumbing
services in the London area, we rang 60 plumbing companies
in London to find out how much they charged per hour.
We did the same for our electricians, calling 60 electrical services companies
in the London area.
Based on this information, we set
our hourly charges to fall within the most competitive
30% of all the rates we were given by our competitors.
In our view, and as also commented
on and presented in the television programmes "House
of Horrors" and "Rogue Traders", the
most expensive 20% of companies we obtained rates
from, were a plain "rip-off" to use the
vernacular. We found (to our surprise) that there
were quite a few companies who were unable to, or
(something which is far more likely given the circumstances
which follow), were unwilling to give us their rates,
insisting that when the plumber or electrician came
round he would work out a figure once he'd had a look.
The competitor surveys were carried
out by a lady with a foreign accent saying that she
needed an extra socket (in the survey on electricians),
and in the case of plumbers, that she had a leak in
the pipe to her radiator. I guess that such simple
calculations were just a little too much for some
of them, although how they got to be plumbers and
electricians without some maths still continues to
baffle me!
PUBLISHED RATES
It is our Policy to publish the rates
we charge our customers (insofar as this is possible) on all our websites advertising
our tradesmen services, so that potential customers
know exactly where they stand and can compare us to
our competitors.
OUR POLICY ON SETTING
WAGES AND HOURLY RATES FOR PEOPLE WHO WORK FOR US
ALL people ARE equal, although some
obviously think that they're more equal than others,
charging £100 and more per hour! - hold the
horses, that's more than my solicitor charges me!
I wonder if there's a law against the public being
exploited? - Legislators and MP's and Gordon Brown,
take note.
Our policy on recruiting workers
whether it is acting as an agency on behalf of an
employer or whether it is in connection with recruiting
staff for one of the companies or services we operate
for our own benefit, is that we ASK potential employees
what rate they would feel comfortable earning (within
reason).
IF the rate they state is LOWER than
we can comfortably afford, taking everything into
consideration (more on that in the next sentence),
then we offer them the rate we can afford and still
remain in profit which under no circumstances is ever
less than the minimum wage as published by the British Government
from time to time.
The rates we offer our staff, temporary workers and subcontractors are influenced by the following
factors : -
a). the rate we charge our customers
(in order to be competitive);
b). the wages paid by other agencies
or companies to the type of trades person;
and
c). the degree of management intervention
we deem will be necessary in order to obtain a reasonable
performance from an individual which can include factors
such as: language support, safety training, and training
related to working in conformity with British Standards.
This means in effect, that the starting
salary or hourly rate paid to some will rise more
than the rate of inflation because, in time, certain
individuals will require less management and other
types of support.
DEALING WITH CRITICISM
No matter what you do, how fair
you believe your actions are, how well you treat people etc. - someone out there will
criticise you for what you are doing, especially if
you happen to be the current Prime Minister or you try to help foreign workers (or at least, so it seems).
IT IS A FACT (Oh NO! Don't give facts!
- they might disturb my prejudices!) that
the influx of foreign nationals into the labour market
in the UK has deeply disturbed the homeostasis of a certain
group of workers who clearly are not aware of all
the facts, or, in the face of competition - spoil for a fight.
IT IS FACT that the construction
industry in Britain has suffered from skilled labour
shortages for many years.
IT IS FACT that the influx of foreign
workers since 2004 has helped keep inflation down,
the by-product being that mortgage rates have been
kept down.
IT IS FACT that foreign trades availability
has added extra impetus to the buy-to-let market,
allowing us to become a wealthier nation.
IT IS FACT that
Sir Digby Jones, Chairman of the Confederation of
British Industry (who asked me to participate in Channel
4 television's "30 minutes" programme on
migrant workers from Poland screened on the 17th August
2006) remarked at a CBI conference that "If it
was not for immigrant labour, especially in leisure,
in tourism, in agriculture, in construction, then
frankly many of our businesses would not have the
workers we need.” Sir Digby also happens to
be a Commissioner for the Commission for Racial Equality
- more about "the Commission" - later.
IT IS FACT that the construction
industry has been thriving for the first time in many years
as a result of foreign labour, although economic uncertainty and falling house prices may reverse this trend in the forseeable future.
.. and finally
IT IS A FACT that we are currently
enjoying the lowest unemployment rate for many years.
The sort of criticism we receive,
I can't repeat some of the expletives used here, nor
would I wish to anywhere else for that matter, is
often plainly racial in its' nature and takes no account
of the above FACTS. Racism is often an irrational
attitude attended by emotion and therefore cannot
be reasoned with.
Within my living memory, I remember
the sort of ridiculous criticism that migrant Pakistani's
and people from India received, comments such as -
"they smell peculiar", "their skin
is black"!
History is repeating itself I fear, because just like then, the fear was that they would take 'our jobs', which conveniently ignored the fact that if it was not for foreign workers, the NHS wouldn't be able to provide the care it does today.
IT IS A FACT that even with the current influx of foreign workers, there are more than 500,000 jobs that cannot be filled by employers desperate to recruit workers (irrespective of their provenance).
MORE INFORMATION
I have published an article called
"Make
love, not war on migrant workers" which was
an attempt to help create a level playing field, I
now realise that the forces that I am up against,
the prejudice and the human tendency to exploit weakness
makes this a much more difficult task than I at first
imagined in my naivety.
You may also like to download and
view a Power
Point™ Presentation (right click and save
to download) which says virtually the same thing about
foreign workers. I love them (in a Christian way)
and nothing will stop me from considering them as
equal to any man.
They may not all understand British
Standards at first, although many of them are more
versed in European Standards than their British contemporaries,
but give them time . . . I'm sure theey'll prove to
be a valuable asset to our British economy in the
short term. Oh yes, their economies are booming, which
is every reason that many will return to their homelands.
Cabbage soup or salami just doesn't taste quite the
same as eating it at home :-)
THE ENEMIES ARE AT
THE DOOR
We have received a letter in the
form of a .pdf in an email from the Legal Services
& Enforcement Directorate's office of the Commission
for Racial Equality informing us of a complaint they
have received from a person they did not name, claiming
that we are in breach of the Race Relations Act 1976
in publishing the website: www.polishlabourers.co.uk
I intend to prove that ALL the allegations
made against that website are false and that if the
attitude of the Commission for Racial Equality is
the same as that represented by a person I spoke to
there, that the
Commission is itself practicing discrimination (in
favour of English workers).
To me it seems such a pity (but not
a waste of time) to have to fight for one's rights,
especially if you happen to be of foreign origin,
and to have to fight the very same government agency
that purports that it is there to uphold your rights.
A bit puzzled? - So am I!
